This is my daughter’s #1 favorite green smoothie recipe. And mine too… not only is is delicious and KID FRIENDLY, but this simple smoothie is full of antioxidants thanks to the cherries and blueberries.

Kale is one of the healthiest and most nutritious plant foods in existence. It has a low calorie content, it’s an excellent source of vitamin C, and even helps fight cancer! (14)

I recommend you use fresh ingredients for this green smoothie recipe, but you can also use frozen fruits and vegetables if fresh isn’t available. Making your first green smoothie at home may seam daunting… but let me give you the advice I give everyone: “Nowhere else in life can you make a mistake that won’t really effect anything, than in your kitchen.”

Green Smoothie Tips and Tricks:

  • Start slowly. If you make a goal to replace all your meals with green smoothies, you may get sick of it and give up. Instead make a goal to replace 3 meals a week with a fruit and vegetable smoothie, after a month of doing this you will start craving them and will find yourself wanting one daily if not more!
  • Start with veggies you can’t taste! Spinach is my favorite as it has no flavor when blended with yummy fruits, cucumber also has a mild flavor and is a good vegetable to start with and carrots are almost as sweet as fruit and make great juices.
  • Follow the 2 to 1 equation. Two fruits and one vegetable, this will keep your smoothie sweet and delicious instead of tasting like a blended salad.
  • Add creaminess with almond milk! Add almond milk to thin your fruit smoothie recipes, not juice! Juice will only add calories and chances are it was pasteurized which means it was heated up and therefore lacking in nutrition. Almond milk is a great way to add protein and best of all it naturally boosts your metabolism!
  • Stock your freezer with organic frozen fruit and vegetables. When companies freeze produce they flash freeze immediately after picking, so you get the most flavor and loads of nutrition too. Plus it’s always available and makes for a chilly iced smoothie. You can also cut and freeze your own fresh fruits and veggies and store them in bags to make your fruit smoothie recipe, Tupperware or jars for quick ready-made smoothies.

    Frozen will give it a thicker consistency, and make it cold. But you don’t have to use frozen if you don’t want to.

  18. Freeze them in ice cube trays. Pop out and store in ziplock bags. ( labeled)… When you want a smoothie simply remove desired amount, and blend.

  20. I wouldn’t freeze the pre-made smoothies. When you re-thaw then they tend to separate and get weird and frothy. You can put all of your ingredients into a ziploc bag and freeze that so all you have to do is throw it in a blender and add a liquid.

  21. Question: What’s your take on suing coconut water for standard water? And cherries are out of season here and I can’t find them frozen, do you have suggestions for substitutes?

  27. I put 1 drop pf dish soap into the blender container with some water, blend it up and rinse. Easiest way to clean out your blender.

  29. Wow, I love all the recipes and ease of doing this! Someone gave my family a juicer and we grow organic produce on a farm, so I have lots to choose from in the summer, but I hate all the ‘juicing’ waste. I am going to have to try doing some of these. They sound so good!
