Watermelon Margarita Recipe You Won’t Feel Guilty Having

Watermelon Margarita Recipe

This delicious Frozen Watermelon Margarita recipe is part of the Drinks chapter of my new cookbook Lose Weight by Eating. The chapter is filled with low calorie cocktails, homemade sodas, fruit infused waters and skinny inexpensive coffee drinks.

Watermelon Margaritas

I tested this Watermelon Margarita recipe while on week-long vacation with my husband’s family, and by day 2 the entire family was begging for more. Thankfully, one watermelon was more than enough to keep them in Watermelon Margaritas for a full week. I even came up with a Virgin Watermelon Margarita version for the kids… which is below the recipe for you to try as well.

Benefits of Watermelon

In addition to great taste, watermelon has a number of health benefits for cardiovascular, bone and organ health. It also contains flavonoids, carotenoids, and triterpenoids which make this fruit a top choice for anti-inflammatory and antioxidant health benefits.

Makes 4 margaritas

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups watermelon cubes
  • ¼ cup silver tequila
  • ¼ cup Grand Marnier or other orange liqueur
  • ½ lime, cut into wedges (optional)

Get started:

Place the watermelon chunks in a large freezer-safe plastic container and freeze them completely, 3 to 5 hours.

Add the frozen watermelon, tequila, and orange liqueur to a blender and blend until smooth. Divide among four glasses and serve with lime wedges.

Watermelon Margarita Recipe Tips

Watermelon Margarita

Be sure to get a seedless watermelon; you don’t want to be seeding the thing for hours or, worse, picking black dots from your drink.

I prefer Grand Marnier, but any orange liqueur will work here; just get your personal favorite or what’s on sale. I highly recommend that you use silver tequila; the gold is far too pungent a flavor for this drink, and a milder flavor means you won’t be tempted to add calories via sugar or agave.

An average watermelon (15 pounds), a standard bottle of tequila (750 mL), and a standard bottle of Grand Marnier (750 mL) will make about sixty margaritas, but this recipe makes a four-margarita pitcher, to get you started. Freeze the rest of the watermelon in freezer bags (4 cups each) for instant margaritas any time.

Make this easy recipe even easier: halve the watermelon and use an ice cream scoop to scoop out the watermelon—you can even get the kids to help here. Just be sure to scoop small balls of watermelon, not huge ones, or they won’t blend well.

Virgin Watermelon Margarita Recipe

It’s easy to make these Watermelon Margaritas for kids. Just swap the tequila and orange liqueur with 1/2 cup organic lemon-lime soda. That’s it!
