I made this delicious Red Wine Marinated Pepper Steak recipe with my Yellow and Green Salad on a hot summer afternoon. I had been sent a beautiful bottle of red wine from the Organic Wine Company to taste and pair with one of my recipes, and upon opening it all I could think of was how delicious it would be with a nice Pepper Steak recipe.
This recipe is loaded with flavor and can be made on the barbeque or in the kitchen, I’ve included directions for both methods. I love the way the mustard, red wine, and pepper come together to tenderize and add tons of flavor to this lean cut of steak. It turns an ordinary backyard BBQ into an elegant food and wine pairing.
I used the leftovers for a Steak, Avocado and Cheddar Healthy Panini Sandwich the next day for lunch. Both meals paired perfect with the wine.
Makes 8 Red Wine Marinated Pepper Steak servings.
- 1 pound sirloin steak
- ¼ cup Prestige wine
- 4 inch sprig of rosemary
- 2 garlic cloves chopped
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- ½ teaspoon spicy mustard (I like English mustard here but any will do)
- Salt and pepper
Combine the wine, rosemary, chopped garlic, olive oil and mustard in a gallon freezer bag or casserole dish. Wisk together to distribute the mustard, add the steak, sprinkle with salt and pepper and marinate for one hour.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees, or your barbeque to medium heat.
FOR OVEN COOKING- Heat a ridged cast iron pan on medium high, place steak on and grill each side for 5-6 minutes. Place the pan in the oven for 15 minutes, less or not at all if it’s a thin cut. This will give you a medium cooked steak.
FOR BARBEQUE GRILLING- Place the steak on the barbeque 5-7 minutes on each side keeping the lid closed. The trick it to cook the steaks on a medium heat which keeps the inside tender, and the outside slightly charred. This will give you a medium cooked steak.
When the steak is done don’t cut into it for 10 minutes, allowing it to rest will result in a tender and juicy cut of meat. Slice thinly against the grain and place on a pretty plate, serve with The Organic Wine Company’s Chateau Bousquette Saint Chinian Prestige 2010 and your favorite summer salad or sides.

One of my great passions is food and wine pairing, and this Red Wine Marinated Pepper Steak is delicious with red wine blends like The Organic Wine Company’s 2010 Chateau Bousquette Saint Chinian Prestige. This delicate red wine is a blend of 75% Syrah and 25% Grenache, from Languedoc in the South of France.
With notes of ruby currants, sweet tart cherries and earthy oak this complex wine is sure to impress, but a warning it’s so drinkable and delicious you’ll wish you had more, so make sure to buy an extra bottle and cellar it.
